Muk Yan Jong - Form

General comments:

The wooden dummy is the most patient training partner possible. Always watch the dummy' - keep watching the central line between you and it. Watch for centerline advantage, where it is, and where it's lost. w

Although the hand motions can be complex, the footwork is critical for spacing. Stay at same distance (radius) from the dummy when you step to the sides (CR 7/11/94) [striking/kicking range].

Try for minimal movement from one to another technique. Precision of moves is important, but also work on flowing from one move to another.

Full extension on palm strikes.

Shift to face the way you step.

About the step directions: step W does not mean 90 degrees to the left as is usual in these notes. Stay within a front 90 degrees arc of the dummy, do not expose back or dead side to myj.

Stick to the dummy arms, stay as close as possible.

Direct power to center of dummy, all motions (even ones which look sideways) are moving toward the dummy.

Adjust movements to the dummy. The myj arms aren't flexible, teach you to roll around a fixed object. Keep a good stance at all times for body positioning.

Conventions for these notes:

The top left post is 1, the top right post is l c A c l

2, and the low center post is 3. The left and l a1b a2b l

right sides of each post are a and b. The face l d d l

area above and between the top posts is A, l B l

the low center between the 3 posts is B, C l c l D

the left side of the pillar at solar plexus l a3b l

height is C, and the right side target is D. l d l

Leg strikes will be indicated by a, b, and c l lLl l

(center) sides of leg, to the thigh(t), shin(s), lel

and knee(k), respectively. lgl

Example: toh ma footwork with pak sao would be coded as Leg-cs, for gon sao and uppercut, coded as Leg-bt.

"Salute":

When approaching dummy for a practice, always check for distance by palming to A. Then a R upwards motion of the arm, like tan sao, to a2, and return R hand to centerline guard position.

Do this before beginning work on the dummy. It is not necessary to do this between sets, unless you stop and go away.

Set One

1) Begin with R leg forward, hands in guard. Do the distance check.

2) R tan sao upwardly to a2, return to center.

3) R palm to A as L wu sao (edge of hand) to b1. Point palm's fingers outwards, not vertical.

4) L grasps 1 as R curls sideways around pillar as far/best as can, pull to you and down by sinking hips. Dig in w/fingertips as though palming a basketball if arms too short to reach around.

5) Step to W and R bong sao to b1.

Need to step far enough so that next move is not cramped.

Contact post w/bong sao wrist, not 1/2way up the forearm.

6) Shift R and step in NE w/R as R tan sao to a1 and L palm to C.

7) Step E (in front of Leg) and large double gon sao (L high to a1, R to a3).

8) Step E past Leg w/R and large quan sao (R tan to a2, L bong to a3).

9) Shift L as step in NW w/L and L tan to b2 as R palm to D.

10) Step W across Leg and large double gon (R high to b2, L to b3).

11) Shift R [you should now be centered again] and cao sao.

Cao sao is a shift to R, L arm chops like high gon to a1 as R arm wraps over b2 to c2 in a counter-clockwise huen, into a "high" low gon sao.

12) L jutts c1 as R huens in, under, out, and palms A(fingers up).

* Keep fingers of jutt hand pointing at face. Use crook of wrist where the thumb base swells. hand is flat and angled slightly upward at myj's face. Use elbows to pull, not upper body.

13) Double jutt c1 and c2.

14) Tok sao (push with both hands diagonally and up, aiming pressure at the dummy's face) d1 andd2.

15) Ready position.

End of first 1/2 of Set 1

2) R grasps 1 as L curls sideways around pillar as far/best as can, pull to you and down by sinking hips.

3) Step to E and L bong sao to a2.

Need to step far enough R so that next move is not cramped.
