Lok Dim Buen Gwan (6 1/2 point long pole) Form For thrusts, drill in, rotating the shaft as point thrusts. Tail is base of shaft, head is the forward grip area. Work with heavy pole to develop power. Watch the end of the pole. Low stance means thighs horizontal, develops legs. Get and stay low. Avoid index finger extending along shaft, will get it broken off (old habit from kendo, don't do it here). 1. Attention. Stand w/feet together. Pole base in R armpit, held out and down to R (measuring grip distance). 2. Move base to R hip (p horizontal), grasp tail w/L. 3. R to R shoulder, tip facing S. 4. L drops to side of L thigh as R extends N a little. 5. L up and forward clockwise and into a low gon sao-like position ("salute"). 6. R retracts to shoulder, and L grasps tail. 7. Thrust E (L to under R armpit, R rotates to palm-down). 8. Step W w/L as turn to face E. L maintains tail as R slides up shaft. Both arms straight. 9. R slides down to meet L, to jab w/tail downwards (about 30 degrees from vertical). 10. R and L separate, return to #8 position. 11. Step E w/L to R foot as vertical strike downwards to E. 12. Curl the pole. 13. Downward shock. (curl back) 14. Downward shock. (curl back) 15. Downward shock. (curl back) 16. Step E w/R into deep horse stance, thighs level, as thrust E (L to under R armpit, R rotates to palm-down). Curl pole. 17. Repeat #16. 18. Repeat #16. Do not curl pole. 19. Step W w/L and turn to face E. L elbow locked, L hand beside L hip. R wrist curls up as turn to bring tip up, R elbow bent. (ready stance) 20. snap R down for short vertical beat to E, then curls back to ready. 21. step E w/L, face N and thrust E. 22. curl the pole. 23. step N w/L, then R. As step forward, outward shock. 24. pull L in to snap tip L (tip moves N) 25. lock L out as pull R in o snap tip R (tip moves S) 26. pull L in to snap tip L (tip moves N) 27. lock L out as pull R in to snap tip R (tip moves S) 28. step N w/L and NE w/R. As R steps, thrust E @ ankle height. 29. step S w/R as drop L to waist level (pole horizontal) 30. bring L to R as thrust E. 31. step S w/R as tip CW to floor, L moves CW high about face level, R steady. (gtswd moullinet) 32. step N w/R as turn face E into ready stance (L locked at side, R bent, face E) 33. move L to circle tip 1 full circle CW, neck-to-groin diameter 34. drop tip to horizontal 35. step-drag E, turn to face N as thrust E. L hand to R waist. Hip thrust #1 of 2. 36. sink weight on L as turn to face E. L locked, R pulls to front of R shoulder. Tip moves 45 degrees up and back. Grip stays in front of body, not cranked back like golf club. (think of SCA 90 degrees rule) Hands do not slide on pole here. 37. sink weight to R as shift L to face N (step S a little w/R) and strike #1 diagonal to N. Pole ends horizontal, pointing E. Both arms locked. 38. Step N w/R (evading) as tip CCW down to floor and S on floor (in a J-shape). L moves CCW high (L @ face level). 39. step S w/R and turn to face E into ready stance as hands reverse J-shape move. 40. L moves tip CW 1 full circle. 41. Drop tip to horizontal 42. step-drag E, turn to face N as thrust E. L hand to R waist. Hip thrust #2 of 2. 43. step S w/R and swing #1 to N. End facing N, pole 45 degrees up/out/right, both arms locked). 44. Level (only, do not dip) out the tip to chest level and step E into low horse as thrust E (L to under R armpit, R rotates to palm-down) 45. Keep L hand in R armpit, drop tip to tap ground on ENE line. 46. Step W w/R (across and in front of L) as move L hand to in front of chest (higher) to move tip in semicircle S and tap on ESE line. Centerline shocking (good for low gon sao) 4. #36-37 shock back and forth. Work up to 1000 reps. Turn hips and body at same time, snappy. 5. #19-20. In ready stance, snap tip only, keep rear hand stationary at hip. 6. low horse step w/thrust 7. Can add #5 before each step. 8. Roll the pole (horizontal grip) deep stance - hold pole evenly in middle, hands spaced. Roll pole fwd 1 minute, then back. 9. Same as #8, punch w/ 1 hand as pull w/other, like rowing a kayak, but level. 10. Roll pole w/vertical grip. 11. Same as #8, raise pole from waist to forehead rapidly. Can also do behind back. 12. step-drag at speed, tip doing small circles (must be a chi gwun exercise) 13. step-drag at speed doing #5 up/down snap 14. diagonal step *(#75-78). 15. #8, but reverse curl using wrist only. Also try w/ 1 hand. 16. In outward shocking position, curl fwd hand all the way up/in, then back to start, work full range. 17. sit low horse, extend arms fully forward and hold resting in thumb-index finger crook. |
